Rhys Evans, a young welsh surfer, travels to Sri Lanka to escape the memory of his girlfriend's infidelity. While in the tropics, among other wild adventures, Rhys fights off wild dogs, avoids being eaten by saltwater crocodiles, is held at gunpoint by battle-hardened guerrillas and endures jungle-surgery without anaesthetic.
Then, as if this isn't enough for a young man to bear, things get a whole lot worse when Rhys' girlfriend pursues him to rekindle their love. Consequently the two of them are unwittingly drawn into Sri Lanka's corrupt and frightening underworld to face a thirty-year jail sentence at Welikada, the island's most notorious prison.
Enjoy this fast paced adventure story set in the steamy tropics of Sri Lanka.
I grew up in the Welsh surfing village of Mumbles on the Gower peninsula in the 70's where I began surfing at the age of twelve on a board it took two of us to carry. At this tender age I could only dream of surfing waves like those splashed up on the makeshift screen during surf club movie nights. Then, during the eighties, having finished my teaching studies, I travelled to Asia to discover these waves for myself. I spent much of this time in Sri Lanka, India and on the mystical islands of Indonesia. During my time in the tropics I kept diaries of my adventures and years later decided to transcribe them into digital format. As I was typing away on my computer and rediscovering those amazing times, I thought - 'Hey, there could be a book in here somewhere?’
...Low and behold, there was.
I currently work as a teacher and live with my wife and two young children in the wine producing Swan Valley in Western Australia.
I still surf whenever I can.
